Low Sex Drive? Give THIS a Try

Q: I was wondering if you have any recommendations for boosting libido. I’m a 65-year-old woman, and I’m just not as “into it” as I used to be.

Dr. G: There can by any number of reasons why your libido isn’t what it used to be. Stress, medications, weight, depression, hormone imbalances, you name it.

So naturally, there’s not one magic bullet for curing it.

If you can identify the underlying cause with your doctor, you’ll be in a better position to fix the problem.

But in general, I’ve found that the best way to boost your libido—whether you’re a woman OR a man—is to make a few targeted lifestyle changes.

Here’s what I’d suggest:

  1. Cut out the processed foods. These fake foods contain chemicals know to impact sexual performance.
  1. Cut back on sugar. It won’t taste so sweet anymore when you realize it negatively impacts your sex hormones—slashing testosterone by as much as 25%.
  1. Stop eating factory-farmed meat. It is pumped full of hormones and antibiotics that lead to your own hormonal imbalances.
  1. Get plenty of morning sunlight. This sets your circadian rhythm for the day, which is critical in regulating your hormones.
  1. Include more natural libido-boosters in your diet. These include dark chocolate, Brazil nuts, watermelon, grass-fed beef, dark leafy greens, and sweet potatoes.

In addition, I’ve found that a number of natural supplements (widely available online) have made a tremendous difference for some of my patients.

  1. Maca. This is an adaptogenic herb proven to help balance hormones and increase desire.
  1. Panex Ginseng. One study showed that it specifically improved sexual desire in women going through menopause.
  1. Ashwagandha. An herb that has been shown to improve sexual function in women.
  1. Tribulus terrestris. This herb has been shown to increase desire, arousal, and satisfaction in women.
  1. Muira puama. This is yet another herb that has unprecedented effects in the bedroom arena. It’s been shown to improve sexual experience in post-menopausal women, and has specifically been shown to boost libido and enjoyment.
