Top 6 Supplements to Lower Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, and even dementia.

But while your doctor and the ads on TV might try to convince you that pharmaceutical drugs are the best (and only) way to combat your hypertension, there are two key things you need to know:

  1. Your blood pressure is completely within your control.
  2. You don’t need a single drug to fix your high blood pressure.

Diet, lifestyle, and specific nutrients can dramatically impact blood pressure.

But if don’t plan on overhauling your habits anytime soon, here are some of the quickest, easiest ways to get on top of your blood pressure.

First, I want to say a quick word about why blood pressure is so harmful to begin with.

The increased pressure in your arteries that goes along with hypertension damages the inner lining of your arteries (the endothelium), which reduces elasticity and limits blood flow throughout your body.

This can damage your heart, leading to coronary artery disease or heart failure.

It can damage your brain, leading to a stroke, dementia, or mild cognitive impairment.

It can also damage your eyes, your kidneys, your bones, and even your sex life.

And all of this happens without any symptoms whatsoever. That means you could have a ticking time bomb inside of your body, and unless you’re specifically checking it, you’d never know.

Yikes.

Clearly there are plenty of good reasons to get your BP numbers down to a healthy range. Exercising, quitting smoking, eating more beneficial foods (like nuts, seeds, fatty fish, and leafy greens) and cutting out sugar, stress, and extra weight all make a huge impact on your blood pressure.

In addition, here are 6 specific nutrients to help you on your way.

  1. Magnesium. A meta-analysis of 11 randomized, controlled trials evaluating the impact of magnesium on hypertension found that supplementation can significantly lower blood pressure in people with insulin resistance, prediabetes, and other chronic conditions.
  2. Coenzyme Q10. Clinical studies show that CoQ10 can lower systolic (top number) blood pressure by 10 mmHg, and diastolic (lower number) blood pressure by 17 mmHg.
  3. Potassium. For some people, eating a lot of salt can increase your blood pressure. Potassium can help counteract this effect by reducing the impact of salt on your system, and by helping ease tension in your blood vessels.
  4. Folate in the form of methyltetrahydofolate (5-MTHF). One meta-analysis in people with high blood pressure shows that taking high doses of folic acid slightly reduced blood pressure in both men and women.
  5. Garlic. Some randomized clinical trials show that garlic significantly lowers both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. This effect makes sense, since garlic can help improve how blood circulates throughout your body.
  6. French maritime bark extract. One study showed that taking 125 mg of pycnogenol (derived from French maritime bark) helped people with mild to moderate hypertension get this blood pressure under control in just 12 weeks!
