If you’re trying to manage your blood pressure, two words probably come to mind:

Diet and exercise.

I agree, they’re an excellent starting point.

But you can do better.

What if the secret to healthy blood pressure was hiding in your morning cup of tea or that square of dark chocolate you’ve been craving?

Scientists have identified a natural compound that gets to the “heart” of optimal blood pressure.

In fact, some studies indicate that its benefits are comparable to those of hypertension medications.

Flavan-3-ols are compounds found in various fruits and vegetables, including tea, apples, cocoa, and grapes. They’re a subclass of flavonoids with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Researchers conducted a large meta-analysis of 145 randomized controlled trials to determine the impact of flavan-3-ols on cardiovascular health.

They found that the compounds effectively decrease blood pressure and improve endothelial function.

But wait—there’s more good news… the improvements were seen in both healthy individuals and those with hypertension.

The numbers are impressive: daily flavan-3-ol consumption reduced blood pressure by an average of 2.8/2.0 mmHg in healthy people.

But in people who already had high blood pressure, the reductions were even more dramatic: 5.9/2.7 mmHg. To put that in perspective, that’s comparable to what you’d expect from some blood pressure medications.

The study shows the effects were dose-dependent and more pronounced in people who needed it most—those with elevated blood pressure to begin with.

Here’s how it works…

The flavan-3-ols target the endothelium, a thin wall of cells lining your blood vessels which regulate blood flow by controlling the constriction and relaxation of the vessels.

This is referred to as vascular tone, and it’s the key to healthy blood pressure.

Endothelial cells produce nitric oxide, which is responsible for causing the smooth muscle cells in the blood vessel walls to relax (dilate).

The result is better blood flow and reduced blood pressure.

Think of your blood vessels like garden hoses. The endothelium acts like a smart controller that knows when to tighten or loosen the hose to maintain perfect water pressure.

If you’re taking medication for high blood pressure, don’t stop it without consulting your doctor.

But including more foods that are high in flavan-3-ols in your meals could reduce your medication needs or prevent you from getting on that bandwagon to begin with.

So, how much do you need? Research suggests about 400-600mg of flavan-3-ols daily—that’s roughly two to three cups of green tea, an ounce of dark chocolate (70 percent cacao or higher), or a medium apple with the skin on.

Some studies show improvements in blood vessel function within just two to four weeks. But remember consistency is key.

P.S. The shocking sleep factor damaging your blood vessels.
