It turns out that vitamin C reactivates genes that increase cell proliferation.

This is critical because cell proliferation—in which dead cells are shed and healthy, new cells take their place—is a cornerstone of youthful skin.

In fact, the researchers noted that the vitamin C-treated skin cells had a 75-fold increase in the expression of 12 proliferation-related genes.

The bottom line? Vitamin C thickens aging skin by activating genes that help skin grow and repair.

Of course, this was just a cell study—but it adds to the growing evidence of C’s role in promoting youthful skin from within.

Prior research found that vitamin C neutralizes free radicals, which can contribute to premature aging. It also helps produce collagen, which is critical for elasticity and firmness. The vitamin can even reduce the appearance of dark spots.

Some of the best food sources of vitamin C include oranges, strawberries, spinach, kale, peppers, tomatoes, and broccoli.
