[Warning!] Dementia Drug INCREASES Mortality
The common drug that’s useless and deadly
Dementia does more than rob you of your memory.
It robs you of your dignity and your sense of self, hitting its victims with symptoms like agitation, personality changes, anxiety, and mood changes.
Since there’s currently no cure, the best the medical community can do is give you drugs to help manage these symptoms.
But it turns out that one of the most popular drugs used to treat agitation in dementia patients is completely useless.
Worse?
It could increase the risk of mortality.
In the past, doctors tried giving antipsychotics to dementia patients to treat their agitation, and it was a disaster.
They found out after the fact that the drug increased death rates and contributed to other poor outcomes.
But doctors don’t like to do nothing, so they started prescribing the antidepressant mirtazapine instead.
Surely that must be better than doing nothing, right?
WRONG.
Researchers recently conducted a study meant to prove mirtazapine’s effectiveness.
Boy were they in for a surprise…
In a double-blind trial, 204 people with probable Alzheimer’s took either mirtazapine or a placebo.
After 12 weeks, it was clear that the antidepressant was no more effective than the placebo at reducing agitation.
But it was better at something else… increasing the chances of dying.
By week 16, only one person in the placebo group had died… compared to SEVEN in the antidepressant group.
It’s clear that when it comes to giving antidepressants to people with dementia, it’s ALL risk and NO reward.
If you have a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia, review their medication list and make sure they’re not being prescribed this useless, life-threatening drug.
