22% lower risk of autoimmune disease

Getting diagnosed with an autoimmune disease can feel like a jail sentence. Except, instead of being locked in jail, you’re stuck in a body that has turned against you.

The specific disease depends on what part of your body is under attack.

In rheumatoid arthritis, for example, your immune system attacks its own joints. In Crohn’s disease, it attacks its gastrointestinal tract. In multiple sclerosis, it attacks its own nerve cells.

The symptoms might be different, but they all have one thing in common:

There is no cure.

That’s why your best bet is to never get an autoimmune disease in the first place.

And you can do that by taking two supplements that have been shown to significantly reduce your risk.

These nutrients are two of my favorites:

Vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids.

For this study, over 25,000 men and women were split into groups to evaluate the connection between these supplements and the incidence of autoimmune disease over the next five years.

They found that those taking vitamin D had a 22 percent lower risk of developing an autoimmune disease during that time.

And those taking omega-3 fatty acids had a 15 percent lower risk of developing an autoimmune disease.

Specifically, there was a decreased risk of…

  • Rheumatoid arthritis,
  • Polymyalgia rheumatica,
  • Autoimmune thyroid disease,
  • Psoriasis, and
  • More.

This was seen with 50 mcg of vitamin D per day, which is significantly higher than the 20 mcg per day recommended for older adults (but under the 100 mcg max per day).

For omega-3s, they were taking 1,000 mg per day, about the recommended daily amount.

As always, I prefer to get nutrients like these through nature’s sources.

In the case of vitamin D, that includes sunlight, and foods like fatty fish, eggs, and mushrooms.

For omega-3s, it’s through foods like salmon, grass-fed beef, and spinach.

If you can’t get adequate blood levels through foods, consider taking supplements to get your levels up to snuff.
