[Alert!] New Aspirin Warning for Seniors
Yesterday I warned you about a popular drug that could be increasing your cancer risk.
And as long as we’re on the topic of dangerous drugs you shouldn’t be taking, I thought I’d highlight another one today.
This time around, it’s a drug that’s been recommended for decades to prevent heart attacks.
I’ve been advising against the practice for just as long—and now the mainstream is finally seeing things my way.
If you’re over 60, you’ll want to read about these new aspirin guidelines.
These new guidelines come from the US Preventive Services Task Force, which is a panel of 16 independent experts appointed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Their job is to review the current scientific evidence and develop recommendations for clinical practice.
And after reviewing the scientific evidence, this panel recommends AGAINST taking low-dose aspirin for primary prevention.
Primary prevention means it’s intended to prevent a FIRST heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular disease event.
Why?
Because the studies show that aspirin provides NO SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT when it comes to preventing all-cause mortality or cardiovascular mortality.
Any slight benefit found was ONLY in higher risk cardiovascular patients, and ONLY when they were also at a low risk of bleeding.
But while the benefits are practically non-existent, the side effects can be deadly.
Taking aspirin on a regular basis can increase your risk of bleeding in the gut or brain.
And the older you are, the higher your risk.
These recommendations are the opposite of the aspirin-a-day mantra the medical community used to recommend for every person over age 50.
And it’s about time.
If you’re currently taking aspirin, talk to your doctor about stopping. But don’t toss the meds in the trash.
The one time I DO recommend taking them is at the first sign of a heart attack.
It could save your life.
P.S. A recent aspirin trial evaluated aspirin use in people over 70 years old. And what they found this time will have you swearing off aspirin for GOOD. Click here for all the details.
