[Alert] Popular Drugs STARVING You From the Inside?!
If I had to rank the drugs I despise most, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) would be at the top.
It’s easy to see why.
These heartburn meds have ALREADY been linked to an increased risk of fractures, infections, kidney disease, gastric cancer, and dementia.
And that’s especially true when they are taken for long periods… as they often are.
But this recent research on PPIs may be some of the most alarming – and frighteningly ironic – news yet.
These same meds that are supposed to be FIXING your gut may actually be starving you from the inside!
Researchers recently studied 49 people with disorders related to stomach acid secretion, such as heartburn and GERD (gastric reflux disease).
Now, we know that acid-suppressing drugs interfere with nutrient absorption, so the researchers compared two common heartburn treatments to see which would have the greater impact on essential nutrient levels.
One group was treated with the PPI omeprazole (Prilosec OTC), while the other group received the antacids famotidine (Pepcid AC) and sucralfate (Orafate).
After 12 months, it was clear that the PPI was the worst of the bunch.
Those taking the PPIs had significantly lower levels of:
- Magnesium
- Calcium, and
- Vitamin B12
These are nutrients absolutely essential to the health of your brain… heart… bones… and more. It was almost as if the PPI was starving people of important nutrients from the inside.
Keep in mind that this study compared PPIs to other types of acid suppressors. If the PPIs were compared to a placebo, I’m sure the results would be even worse.
If you’re taking a PPI – and especially if you have been taking one for a long time – talk to your doctor about having your nutrient levels tested.
In the meantime, if you’re looking to control your heartburn, you can try a simple method I use myself.
I only eat during the daylight hours. Some people call this intermittent fasting, but I call it common sense.
First off, we know that eating late at night can exacerbate acid reflux… you’ve probably seen that yourself if you’ve eaten shortly before bed, and it feels like there is hot lava climbing up the back of your throat.
Second, there is good research showing that intermittent fasting may restrict the over-production of gastric acid.
Limiting your eating window each day can also improve your weight and blood sugar – and you don’t have to worry about the laundry list of side effects that come with risky drugs.
P.S. “Teflon-Coat” your colon against cancer.
