Senior moment, memory lapse, brain fart…

Call it what you will, we all experience momentary lapses in memory that we chalk up to age.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

There are key nutrients you can take to keep your brain fit and young.

One of the best has been used for over 2,000 years for boosting your immune system, treating diabetes, and even managing sexual dysfunction.

And now it’s been shown to boost your memoryattention, and cognition, too.

American ginseng is an herbal root extract that is particularly rich in beneficial compounds like flavonoids, phenolic compounds, essential oils, vitamins, and ginsenosides.

For this in vivo study, 61 people from 18-40 received either 200 mg of a ginseng supplement or a placebo.

Mood and cognitive testing were done at 2, 4, and 6 hours after taking the supplement to test the immediate effects.

Then more testing was done after they had taken the supplement daily for two weeks.

Immediate benefits were seen in working memory and attention. Working memory is important for reasoning and decision making.

And those benefits continued to increase after two weeks of supplementation.

The people also experienced improvements in mental fatigue and mood.

In addition to showing that ginseng provides these brain benefits, the study also showed us why.

It has to do with ginseng’s impact on your gut microbiome, which is known to affect cognitive function.

A parallel in vitro study showed significant increases in the beneficial gut bacteria Akkermansia muciniphila and Lactobaccilus

There were also increases in the short chain fatty acids acetate, propionate, and butyrate, which help strength gut barrier function.

The study didn’t look into the long-term benefits of supplementation, but if you’re in need of a quick brain boost, consider taking advantage of ginseng’s benefits.
