Can This “Super Nutrient” Save Kidney Patients’ Lives?
If you’re suffering from kidney failure, dialysis can be a lifeline…
But when it comes to your heart, dialysis isn’t doing you any favors at all.
With all the fluctuations in blood pressure, fluids, and electrolytes caused by dialysis, it can be absolutely brutal on your cardiovascular system.
In fact, nearly half of dialysis patients end up dying from heart problems… not kidney disease.
But now there may be some new hope on the horizon…
Breakthrough research has just proven that a simple, cheap “super nutrient” can slash dialysis patients’ risk of dying from heart problems by a staggering 45%.
And if you or someone you love is on dialysis, getting enough of this nutrient could literally be a matter of life and death.
A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, conducted across 26 sites in Canada and Australia, gave dialysis patients 4 g. of fish oil a day or a placebo.
As researchers followed the patients over the next 3.5 years, the results were incredible.
The dialysis patients who took fish oil daily were…
- 44% less likely to have a heart attack
- 43% less likely to suffer any major cardiovascular event
- 63% less likely to suffer a stroke
- And 45% less likely to suffer a cardiac-related death.
Friend, I have been at this a long time – and the numbers don’t get any more convincing than that. Taking fish oil was literally a matter of life or death for many of these dialysis patients.
And, honestly, I’m not too surprised.
The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil help control inflammation. And you’ve heard me talk before about the omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which helps support your mitochondria – the energy centers of your cells.
And supporting the mitochondria in your heart’s cells is especially important if you’re looking to avoid heart disease.
I’m a big believer in DHA in particular, which is why I eat fish throughout the week – often fish I catch myself. And eating fish is still the best way to get more omega-3s like DHA in your diet.
But if you or a loved one is on dialysis, you may want to talk to your doctor about adding a fish oil supplement to your regimen. Fish oil is considered a remarkably safe supplement, although your doctor may want to conduct some additional monitoring if you are on blood thinners.
