Make Lifelong Friends With This One Experiment

One fine summer day in June 1992, I had the good fortune to share a cup of rosehip tea with Helen Nearing -- one of the most original thinkers I’ve ever met. Among other things, she was able to share with me one rule that has helped me to make, and keep, more friends than anything else.

The Steak, Tomatoes, and Bourbon Diet

My uncle Gordon, an eastern Oregon rancher who died in January at age 89 after a rip-roaring life, always told me that the foundation of a healthful diet was the “three basic food groups: steak, tomatoes, and bourbon.” While I wouldn’t endorse this as a complete diet (and he did branch out -- the man loved all vegetables), the fact is that Gordon remained sharp, slender, and energetic until the end. It turns out, there’s scientific reasons as to why.

Exposing Congress’ GMO Secret

I’m so angry, I can’t write long sentences. So here are short ones. House Resolution 1599 passed the House on July 23. It proposes many terrible things. Here are three. A Nugget of Icelandic Wisdom

Whether the subject is finance, politics… or nutrition, Iceland’s frigid climate seems to yield hardheaded people with abundant common sense. The Weird Stuff Healthy People Eat

A young friend recently told me that he had never eaten liver, but had “smelled it cooking once -- I thought I would hurl.” And a quick Internet survey reveals that Americans describe natto as smelling like “sweaty feet” or “burning inner tubes,” with a taste that evokes “death itself.” So I realize these eating habits make us unusual. But -- and this is a vital point -- one reason we selected these foods is because they are nutrient dense.

An Odd, Essential Reason to Go Camping

I write to you from the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon, 10 miles southeast of the Texas panhandle town of Amarillo. I’m in a folding “camp chair.” My MacBook Pro balances on my bare knees. All around rise the 800-foot crimson cliffs of this immense rift, second in size only to the Grand Canyon. My wife Laurie and I are camping. Primitive camping.

The Weight Loss Myth: Why You’re Most Certainly Doing It All Wrong

The conventional wisdom (now there’s an oxymoron) is that the best way to lose weight is to “eat less and exercise more.” Note the symmetry. Both tactics in this common phrase (and it is common -- this precise string of words brings up 93,000 Google hits) get equal billing. Except… it’s not true.

The Real Key to Happiness

“If you observe a really happy man, you will find him building a boat, writing a symphony, educating his son, growing double dahlias in his garden, or looking for dinosaur eggs in the Gobi desert. He will not be searching for happiness as if it were a collar button that has rolled under the radiator.”
