COVID-19: What Diabetics NEED to Know
COVID-19 is wreaking havoc on people with type 2 diabetes.
The latest statistics show that people with type 2 diabetes are more than three times as likely to die from COVID-19 than those without.
To better understand why, a new study took a closer look at the impact COVID-19 has on type 2 diabetics.
The researchers identified surprising factors associated with a higher chance of survival…
Plus, the complications that can increase the risk of death.
Here’s what you need to know.
The CORONADO (coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 and Diabetes Outcomes) study included about 2800 people averaging 70 years old.
Most of the people were slightly overweight, 44 percent had microvascular diabetic complications, and 39 percent had macrovascular diabetic complications.
About 50 percent of the patients had been discharged from the hospital within 28 days (average hospital stay of 9 days). And about 21 percent of the patients died.
The researchers found that there were a number of factors associated with a higher chance of survival:
- Younger age
- Diabetes therapy with metformin
- Longer symptom duration when admitted
On the other hand, there were numerous factors associated with a higher risk of death, including:
- A history of microvascular complications
- Routine anticoagulant therapy
- Shortness of breath when admitted
- Abnormal levels of liver enzymes
- Higher levels of the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein
Additionally, diabetics who were regularly treated with insulin were 44 percent more likely to not survive.
But here’s the big takeaway:
Knowing the underlying factors that make COVID-19 more fatal in some diabetics than others can help doctors more adequately treat those facing higher risks.
For you, a key takeaway here is that having type 2 diabetes does NOT have to be a death sentence if you contract COVID-19.
The better you have your diabetes under control, the better your outcome.
And that’s true whether you’re talking about COVID-19… or life in general.
