Diabetes Drug CAUSING Flesh-Eating Infections
There are all sorts of reasons why I do my best to keep my patients off prescription drugs.
One big reason is that most of the time you simply don’t need them.
But another is because of the long list of side effects they can cause.
I’ve seen some doozies over the years, but this one takes the cake.
A new study shows that a very popular diabetes drug has been linked to a deadly flesh-eating genital infection.
And it could be in your medicine cabinet right now!
The genital infection is called Fournier gangrene, a flesh-eating infection of the scrotum, penis, or perineum.
Symptoms include pain and redness that quickly progresses to gangrene and sloughing of tissue.
This type of infection is extremely rare, but you still don’t want to do something that could intentionally cause it to develop.
But a recent report by the FDA – published in the Annals of Internal Medicine – shows that taking a popular (FDA approved) drug can send your risk of developing this nasty infection through the roof.
It’s a class of type 2 diabetes drug called sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors that are designed to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes.
These drugs go by the names canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, and empagliflozin.
In fact, the FDA even issued a WARNING because of the link between this class of drug and deadly infection.
Every case linking the drug to the infection resulted in hospitalization and surgery… and one person died.
But nothing has been done – other than to warn doctors prescribing the drug to be on high alert for this potential complication.
Like I said… nothing.
The most tragic part of all of this is that you don’t need drugs to manage your blood sugar.
Making the diet and lifestyle changes I’m always talking to you about – like getting more sunlight and intermittent fasting – can keep your blood sugar right where it needs to be.
That way you won’t have to worry about the life-threatening risks associated with diabetes – or the drugs to treat it.
