Diabetes Drugs DOUBLE Amputation Risk
Having diabetes is bad enough…
Your health is constantly threatened with things like nerve damage… kidney failure… and even serious eye problems.
When you look at the side effects of a certain diabetes drug, things go from bad to worse.
You see, new research shows that taking certain diabetes drugs can DOUBLE your risk of having a life-changing amputation.
And there’s a good chance you’re taking one right now.
Here’s what you need to know to stay safe.
One of the biggest complications of diabetes is heart failure.
That’s why lots of diabetics take diuretics.
These drugs help control blood sugar and blood pressure by getting rid of excess salt and water from the blood. This makes it easier for your heart to pump.
But as a recent study showed, diuretics come with a pretty serious downside.
When a research team tracked 1,500 patients with diabetes, they found that folks taking diuretics had a 75% increased risk of having an amputation or a bypass.
When looking at amputations alone, they were DOUBLED in those taking diuretics.
But it gets worse.
Becauseanother common diabetes drug called canagliflozin (brand names Invokana and Invokamet) has ALSO been shown to DOUBLE the risk of leg and foot amputations in diabetics.
In fact, the risk is so great that the FDA is now requiring these meds to carry the infamous BLACK BOX WARNING.
I find it ironic that drugs used to treat diabetes increase one of the most physically and psychologically damaging complications of the disease.
Thanks for nothing, right?
If you’re taking either of these drugs – and especially if you’re taking BOTH – talk to your doctor about other options that don’t come with these risks.
To a brighter day,
