20-Minute Ritual Resets Your Body Clock
I’m passionate about circadian health.
It’s why I’ve preached the importance of honoring your body’s natural rhythms for decades.
When you do, everything is better—from mood to heart health.
So, it’s nice to finally see the mainstream catching up with me.
New research confirms what I’ve said all along: simple changes to your light environment can dramatically improve your well-being.
In fact, they could turn you into a “morning person” …
Researchers in Japan say letting natural light into your bedroom for just 20 minutes before your alarm goes off could be the key to banishing that “I-can’t-function-without-coffee” feeling many of us struggle with in the morning.
The team at Osaka Metropolitan University tested three different morning light patterns on participants:
- pre-wake light exposure
- gradual light from dawn until waking
- complete darkness until wake-up.
Using brain monitors and heart trackers, they measured how alert people felt afterward.
They found that 20 minutes of natural light before waking outperformed both darkness and continuous dawn light. In fact, too much light from dawn disrupted sleep for some folks, causing unwanted middle-of-the-night awakenings.
Why does this work so well?
It all comes back to our circadian rhythm or internal clock, which has been regulating our sleep patterns since long before electricity and alarm clocks existed.
Morning light is like a reset button. It tells your brain, “Hey, it’s morning! Time to reduce melatonin and ramp up those alertness hormones!”
Of course, I’ve recommended morning light exposure to my patients for years. However, this research suggests that folks who find it difficult to head outside before dawn might want to harness the power of morning light before they even wake up.
The researchers suggest motorized smart curtains that can be programmed to open automatically. If that’s too much of an investment (or simply too much of a hassle) you can always follow my standard recommendation to step outside before the sun rises.
I’ve seen remarkable improvements in patients who prioritize proper light exposure. Better mood, improved sleep quality, sharper thinking—the benefits extend far beyond just feeling less groggy in the morning.
What I find most exciting about this approach is that it’s entirely natural. No pills and no side effects—just aligning your environment with your biology. In a world where we’re increasingly disconnected from natural cycles, these small reconnections can profoundly affect our health.
So, tomorrow morning, let a little sunshine in. It not only could turn you into a “morning person,” but it could also transform your entire day.
P.S. “Body Clock” secret reboots your genes in just seven weeks.
