Is THIS What’s Causing Your Knee Pain?!
Dear Reader,
When the mainstream talks about arthritis, they usually blame the same old things.
Age. Wear and tear. Being overweight. Old injuries.
But new research suggests they may be missing one of the biggest joint destroyers of all.
In fact, this hidden trigger can send your increase your risk of arthritis — and even knee replacement surgery through the roof!
And you could be putting your joints at risk every single day.
Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine analyzed health data from nearly 500,000 adults enrolled in the UK Biobank.
And what they found was alarming.
People who slept fewer than six hours per night or regularly struggled to fall or stay asleep faced an up to 40% higher risk of developing hip or knee osteoarthritis compared to those who slept about seven hours per night.
But the findings became even more concerning when researchers looked at shift workers.
People who worked night shifts had:
- 24% higher risk of knee osteoarthritis
• 28% higher risk of needing knee replacement surgery
Even after accounting for body weight and other health factors, the increased risk remained.
Why? Because sleep isn’t just about rest.
It’s about timing.
Your body operates on a built-in 24-hour biological clock known as your circadian rhythm.
That clock regulates virtually every repair process in the body.
Including inflammation. Pain sensitivity. Tissue repair. And collagen maintenance.
When your circadian rhythm becomes disrupted, those repair systems can start malfunctioning.
In other words? Your joints aren’t just suffering from wear and tear.
They may be suffering from a lack of repair.
The researchers noted that the association was even stronger for the knee than the hip, suggesting that circadian disruption may affect different joints in different ways.
Perhaps the most fascinating finding was that many participants developed arthritis despite having no chronic joint pain when the study began.
That suggests poor sleep may HELP cause osteoarthritis rather than simply result from it.
Personally, I believe one of the most overlooked arthritis-prevention strategies is strengthening your circadian rhythm.
That means:
- Getting sunlight within an hour of waking
• Going to bed at the same time every night
• Waking at the same time every morning
• Avoiding bright screens before bed
• Keeping your bedroom cool and dark
• And minimizing night-shift work whenever possible
Because your body performs its most important repair work when your internal clock is working properly.
And according to this research, protecting your circadian rhythm today may help protect your knees for years to come.
