“Always drink upstream from the herd.

— Will Rogers

Dear Natural Health Solutions Reader,

Last week, I asked “What’s the best piece of health advice — physical, mental, or both — you ever received?”

The inbox overflowed, as did my gratitude! There is hard-won knowledge and deep wisdom on display here.

So without further ado:

Judy: Eat as close to the earth as possible.

John: Avoid prescription medications.

Jeanne: Love myself. This practice of saying “I love myself” while letting yourself really feel the emotion is truly amazing! You find that not only is your relationship with yourself better, but all your relationships benefit!

Edward: Remember to dance, even if others cannot hear the music! The music of love is what unites all of us!

Ben: Trust in God in ALL that is done.

Richard: My grandfather, an M.D. and graduate of the University of Pennsylvania way back in the 1920s, said, “Make sure you have at least one bowel movement every day.”

Ted: Three things I have committed to that I recommend to all:

  1. Go organic. I believe it is well worth the added cost. But also be aware that the stores are also telling us that many items are organic that we do NOT need to buy — anything with a thick skin that we do not eat (bananas, citrus) and things like maple syrup, which is organic by its very nature. Check the ingredients for everything, but don’t waste your money on items you don’t need to.
  1. Go non-GMO. I view this movement as equivalent to the tobacco battles of the ’70s — Monsanto and others have no idea what these products will do to our systems when consumed, and the producers are big and strong enough to lobby (think “buy”) their way to legislation that protects them and threatens us. I stay away from GMO every way I can.
  1. I strongly recommend a book by Robert Thompson titled The Calcium Lie. This is one of the very best little books about vitamins and minerals I have ever encountered. As a result of reading it, I have started taking trace minerals and I feel better for having done that. I am also much more aware of what ingredients are in the supplements I take. I did the hair sample mineral analysis recommended in the book, and it was most interesting.

“Tut”: Everything in moderation.

Jerry: Keep up with your hormones. As we age — I’m a 77-year-old male — we lose the ability to produce hormones and our bodies age and deteriorate. Supplementing with bioidentical hormone cream, compounded with what I need to keep my levels youthful, has kept me feeling as good as I did in my 40s and 50s. I advise “kids” – 40-year-olds — to record their hormone levels and then supplement to stay there through life. In addition to eating healthy most of the time and taking supplements I feel pretty darn good and rarely get sick.

Fred: My discovery: Give your heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit to Jesus Christ. Be blessed!

A.J. I am 55, a father of four, grandfather of five and husband of two (divorced then remarried). I own several businesses, have real estate investments and other investments, and stay very busy. The best advice I ever received is this: Always remember that I am No. 1. This simply means that I have to take care of me first. Physically and intellectually, it is my responsibility to be my best so that I can then share and provide for those around me. I live my life this way, and so far… it’s worked out great!

K: NO ONE knows your body better than YOU do. Be attuned to how you feel and trust in your own feelings and instincts. If a doctor tells you one thing but you feel it’s something else or that there’s more to it, don’t hesitate to investigate further. Get a second opinion, talk to friends, look it up (from reputable websites) on the Internet, and then — GO BY HOW YOU FEEL.

Sue: You could eat the best diet in the world, but if other aspects of your life are out of balance, it will not make any difference as to what you eat. You have to manage stress and your personal spiritual beliefs as well.

Charlie: If you don’t use it, you lose it.

Again, thank you so much for sharing these wonderful ideas! And to Jerry, who encouraged me to “keep up the good work taking on the establishment,” I humbly promise that’s exactly what I’ll do!
