It seems that the study participants who represented night shift workers had white blood cells that were more vulnerable to DNA damage, and that their DNA repair mechanisms were faulty.

This can be a major contributor to cancer.

The difference in whether that damage turns into cancer or not is determined by how your body deals with the damage.

If genes that repair DNA damage are faulty, damaged DNA accumulate, the DNA becomes unstable, and you’re on the path to cancer.
