Tackle BOTH Sleep and Mood Problems
I love using unconventional methods to treat common problems.
And by unconventional, I mean anything other than what the mainstream would tell you to do.
Take mood and sleep problems, for example.
Too many people get a prescription and are sent on their merry way. I call that “getting written off.”
Instead, I’ve found a simple way to tackle BOTH problems at once—no prescription necessary.
For this double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 70 healthy adults took either a multi-strain probiotic or a placebo for six weeks.
Researchers then evaluated each of the volunteer’s mood and sleep quality.
Using several common measurements (LEIDS-R, STAI, and LOT-R), the researchers found that probiotic supplementation significantly improved mood in ALL tests compared to the control.
Results for sleep were just as impressive.
The probiotic group had better sleep quality and duration than the placebo group.
What I REALLY appreciated about this study was that it also looked into why they got these results.
What the researchers determined was that the probiotic significantly increased serotonin levels.
Studies show that an imbalance in this vital neurotransmitter can simultaneously cause mood AND sleep disorder symptoms.
Serotonin is known as the body’s “feel-good” hormone. However, it ALSO gets converted into melatonin, the body’s “sleep” hormone.
So it’s easy to see how boosting this ONE chemical with probiotics could have such a significant impact on both.
This study highlights the importance of gut health for much more than digestive issues.
The particular multi-strain probiotic used in the study included 1 billion live cells of each of the following:
- fermentum (DSM 26956)
- rhamnosus LR06 (DSM 21981)
- plantarum LP01 (LMG P-21021)
- longum 04 (DSM 23233)
But any similar multi-strain, high-quality probiotic will likely have comparable benefits.
