The TRUTH About Coffee and Heart Health
Reading about the mainstream’s position on the benefits of coffee is like watching a game of ping-pong.
Coffee is bad for you… it’s good for you.
It will cause heart problems… it will prevent heart problems.
It will shorten your life… it will help you live longer.
Enough already!
It’s time to end this back and forth once and for all.
Thankfully, the American College of Cardiology helped set the record straight at their Annual Scientific Session.
Three key studies were presented at this session, and they all came to the same conclusion: Not only is coffee NOT bad for your heart… it’s actually GREAT for your heart health.
Let’s look at them one at a time.
For the first study, researchers looked at data from over 380,000 people without heart disease at the start of the study.
After 10 years of follow up, they found that drinking 2-3 cups of coffee per day was associated with a 10-15 percent lower risk of developing coronary heart disease, heart failure, a heart rhythm problem, or dying from any cause at all.
Two-three cups was the magic number. Drinking more or less coffee had fewer benefits.
For the second study, researchers looked at over 30,000 people who already had heart disease at the beginning of the study.
Once again, those who drank 2-3 cups of coffee had lower odds of dying during follow-up. Drinking coffee was NOT found to increase the risk of heart rhythm problems or atrial fibrillation.
For the third study, researchers analyzed the benefits of instant vs. ground and decaf vs. caffeinated.
Regardless of whether the coffee was instant or ground, people who drank 2-3 cups per day had a lower incidence of arrhythmias, blockages in the heart’s arteries, stroke, or heart failure.
In addition, drinking any kind of coffee lowered the risk of death.
Are you seeing the pattern here?
Coffee is GREAT for your heart AND your health.
Coffee contains beneficial compounds that have been shown to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, boost metabolism, and more.
I think I’ll go pour a second cup right now.
P.S. I recently wrote about how coffee can dramatically reduce your risk of a major health threat facing older Americans. Click here to find out what the condition is.
