Triple Protection for Your Memory
With dementia, episodic memory is one of the first things to go.
This involves recalling the specific time and place of events that occurred in the past.
When episodic memory slips, recalling personal experiences and recent events can become difficult.
Eventually, it affects your ability to perform your activities of daily living and hampers your ability to form new memories.
Now, a unique formula has been shown to improve this type of critical memory in older adults already dealing with troublesome age-related cognitive decline.
The new study included people who were experiencing subjective memory complaints. You know, the kind of bothersome brain burps that can start to worry you as you age.
These memory slips don’t necessarily mean these folks will go on to develop Alzheimer’s or dementia, but it does dramatically increase their risk of future memory-related issues.
In fact, people with so-called subjective memory issues are twice as likely to develop dementia.
Based on this connection, the researchers wanted to see if a unique astaxanthin-based formula could help.
Because high levels of oxidative stress are tied to memory problems, the researchers tested a formula with potent antioxidant activity.
It included:
- Astaxanthin (9 mg)
- Vitamin E (12 mg)
- Grape juice extract (250 mg)
The study participants all had mild memory problems, but they had not been diagnosed with dementia or other cognitive disorders.
After 12 weeks, the participants experienced significant improvements in their episodic memory compared to those taking the placebo.
Blood tests revealed that those taking the antioxidant blend also had two critical benefits for their brain:
- An increase in BDNF (a molecule that plays a crucial role in long-term memory), and
- a decrease in MDA (a result of oxidative stress that weakens brain function).
This shows that this combination can help protect memory and also suggests how it does the job.
