“Miracle Vitamin” Reduces Cancer Risk 38%
It’s no secret that vitamin D can help combat cancer.
Studies even show that it can help prevent you from dying from this life-threatening illness.
But even if you think you’re getting plenty of vitamin D, you could be doing something else that cancels out this key protective benefit.
And unfortunately, this is the reality that affects more than two-thirds of adults in the US.
Here’s what you need to know to make sure you’re not one of them.
The VITAL Trial was conducted in 2018. It stands for The Vitamin D and Omega-3 Trial, and its purpose was to evaluate both the independent and combined effects of vitamin D and omega-3 supplements on cancer and cardiovascular disease.
The study included more than 25,000 people age 50 and over.
In a secondary analysis, researchers took a second look at the study to see if there was a connection between vitamin D and dying from cancer.
Ultimately, they found a 17 percent REDUCED risk of metastatic or fatal cancer in people who took vitamin D supplements.
But here’s the interesting part…
That risk reduction grew to 38 percent in people who supplemented with vitamin D who also had a normal BMI (body mass index).
This suggests that being overweight could potentially cancel out the protective effects of vitamin D.
This study confirms two things:
- The protective effect of vitamin D against cancer.
- The dangers of being overweight.
It also confirms numerous previous studies. Take a look:
- Epidemiological studies show that people who live near the equator (where vitamin D is stronger) have lower cancer rates and of dying from cancer.
- Animal studies have shown that vitamin D slows the progression of cancer.
- Past studies have shown that vitamin D is more beneficial in people with type 2 diabetes in people with normal weight.
- Up to 72 percent of cancer patients are deficient in vitamin D.
- Obesity increases the risk of numerous types of cancer.
Bottom line: Obesity increases your risk of dying from cancer, while vitamin D helps reduce your risk of dying from cancer.
So, for the best protection against cancer, stay a healthy weight and get plenty of vitamin D.
