Warning! Popular Sleep Supplement Could Be Dangerous
Use has doubled in the past decade
I often write about steps you can take to BOOST your sleep. But today I want to talk about what NOT to do.
You probably already know that I’m not a fan of sleeping pills.
But I also want to warn you about one of the most popular NATURAL supplements that’s hailed for its sleep benefits.
Use of this supplement has doubled in the last decade.
The problem is that it could be doing far more harm than good.
Some people believe that if something is natural, it must be safe.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
This is especially the case with the popular sleep supplement, melatonin.
The problem with melatonin is that it’s not an herb; it’s a hormone.
Melatonin is known as the sleep hormone because of its role in helping regulate your body’s sleep cycles.
But using too much of it—or using it for long periods of time—could cause numerous problems throughout your body.
I’ve always advised against the chronic use of supplemental melatonin because of the potential risk of retinal thinning that was seen in some animal studies with prolonged use.
It’s also been linked to problems like headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, and low blood pressure—and it’s been known to interact with certain medications.
Short-term use might not be a problem, but long-term use is much more risky.
This is compounded by the fact that many people are getting FAR more than they realize.
Studies have indicated that some melatonin products on the shelves have up to 478 percent higher levels than what’s listed on the label.
Instead of supplementing melatonin directly, a better option is to take the back door approach by taking melatonin precursors like 5-HTP or hydroxytryptophan.
These supplements can be safe and effective for helping with sleep, while avoiding the potential problems of taking melatonin directly.
