Ordinary Nutrient Naturally Reduces Blood Sugar
Can a single nutrient help those with type 2 diabetes significantly reduce blood sugar levels?
Pharmaceutical companies want you to believe the answer is no.
But according to a recent study, the answer is a resounding YES!
In fact, one of my favorite nutrients has been shown to significantly reduce blood sugar levels in an incredible 95 percent of type 2 diabetics.
Can you guess what it is?
If you said omega-3s, you’re spot on!
Omega-3s are polyunsaturated fatty acids in food like salmon, tuna, walnuts, and chia seeds.
They’ve earned a name for themselves in recent years for being good for brain, heart, and eye health, while reducing the risks of inflammation, metabolic syndrome, anxiety, and more.
But they deserve to be a staple in your house if you need some extra help managing your blood sugar levels.
Researchers measured the blood levels of 161 type 2 diabetics. The volunteers also shared the details of how often they ate certain foods.
Ultimately, researchers found that consuming…
- .4 grams of omega-3s daily helped 95 percent of diabetics achieve an HbA1c of 7 percent.
- 3 grams of omega-3s helped 90 percent of diabetics achieve an HbA1c of 6.5 percent.
The higher the intake of omega-3s, the lower the blood sugar levels.
In addition, a person’s “good” HDL cholesterol level impacted omega-3’s effect on blood sugar. If HDL levels were low, omega-3 was cleared faster from the body and didn’t have as significant an effect.
Of course, the researchers ended up saying that more research is necessary.
That may be the case, but with plenty of research already showing that omega-3s are healthy and safe, I’m not waiting around for more studies before I start reaping their benefits.
I prefer to get my omega-3s from food sources like salmon and walnuts.
- Salmon and herring, for example, have more than 2 grams of omega-3s in one 3.5 oz serving.
- Flax seeds have 2.3 grams per tablespoon.
- Chia seeds have 5 grams per ounce.
- And walnuts have 2.5 grams per ounce.
It’s easy to see how regularly adding foods like this to your diet can provide you with all the omega-3s you need for optimal health benefits.
