Naturally Maintain Estrogen THROUGH Menopause
Researchers have identified a rather surprising and effective drug-free way to help maintain estrogen levels during and after menopause.
Any woman who has gone through perimenopause or menopause knows firsthand how hormones (or the lack of them) can impact your quality of life.
For women in “the transition,” declining estrogen levels, in particular, can trigger symptoms like mood changes, night sweats, hair loss, fatigue, and the infamous hot flashes.
Menopause is normal.
But the symptoms associated with it don’t have to be.
Researchers have identified a rather surprising and effective drug-free way to help maintain estrogen levels during and after menopause.
In a recent Natural Health Today, I explained that everything in your body is connected. Last week’s example concerned the fact that your heart health can impact your dementia risk. (Read about that here.)
Today, I’m going to tell you about an entirely different connection…
It’s about how gut health impacts hormone levels, which can play a role in your menopause and postmenopause experience.
Researchers studied two probiotic strains that impact estrogen levels.
These two strains—Levilactobacillus brevis and Lacticasebacillus rhamnosus—have been shown to have GUS activity.
Beta-glucuronidase, or GUS, is an enzyme that can convert an inactive form of estrogen back into the active form. This causes estrogen to get reabsorbed into the bloodstream instead of excreted from the body.
Based on this action, researchers wondered if supplementing with a probiotic containing these strains would help improve estrogen levels in pre- and postmenopausal women.
To find out, they gave 111 healthy peri- and postmenopausal women either a placebo or a probiotic containing L. brevis KABP052, plus Lactiplantibacillus plantarum KABP051, and Pediococcus acidilactici KABP021.
After 12 weeks, the group taking the probiotic blend had significantly higher levels of estrogen and estrone compared to the placebo group.
I love that something as simple as supporting gut health could also be powerful enough to impact the quality of life for women going through menopause.
This is yet another example of how your gut is the gatekeeper for so much of your health. This is true for both women AND men.
