Want a Healthier Gut? Try This Simple Trick
Dear Reader,
A few weeks ago I told you about one of the last true hunter-gatherer people groups on Earth.
Even though their diet is extremely limited, they have 30 percent more diversity in their gut bacteria than most of us in the modern world.
Here’s what they don’t have: chronic disease.
And it’s no wonder! More than 70 percent of our immune system lies in the gut. Over 38 trillion bacteria live there, and they do a whole lot more than help break down food.
These bacteria essentially arm our immune systems for battle, helping protect us from everything from the common cold to cancer.
Most Americans don’t have nearly the gut diversity they need for good health. But a recent study has shown an easy way to get back on track.
Omega-3s are already well-known for their ability to improve cardiovascular benefits and protect against cognitive decline.
But a recent study published in the journal Scientific Reports lists yet another reason to make sure you’re getting enough of this essential nutrient in your diet.
For this study, researchers analyzed the gut microbiomes of 876 twins and compared those numbers to their intake of omega-3s, as well as their blood levels of omega-3s.
The results? The higher the omega-3s, the more diverse the bacteria in the gut.
The people who had higher intakes of omega-3s also had higher numbers of a specific bacteria that has been shown to reduce inflammation and lower the risk of obesity.
Before the days of refrigeration, no one had to “try” to maintain healthy gut bacteria. People ate natural, whole foods, and their diets included plenty of fermented foods like sauerkraut, kefir, and kimchi, which are packed with good bacteria.
But our modern diet has destroyed our gut diversity, and it is paving the way to sickness and disease.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
The best thing you can do to improve your gut health (and your overall health!) is to eat whole, natural food – and to STOP eating processed, sugar-laden crap. And as part of that healthy diet, make sure you’re getting plenty of omega-3s.
The ideal way to get your omega-3s is though food, and the best food sources include fish and shellfish. You should be able to get all the omega-3s you need by eating at least 3 servings of wild-caught fish and sea veggies every week.
