4 Steps to GREAT Sex for Seniors
Q: Last week, you talked about the health benefits of having sex in our golden years. My husband and I would love to take advantage of those benefits, but we’ve been having some trouble in that area. My husband doesn’t want to go to the doctor or resort to taking pills. Are there other things we can try?
Maggie D.
Dr. G: Loss of sex drive—and even erectile dysfunction—can take a hit to your quality of life, that’s for sure.
Does that mean you should roll over and play dead? No way, Jose!
You can still have fantastic sex in your golden years.
But decades of exposure to toxins, processed foods, and electromagnetic fields do take their toll on the body—and that means you may need to take extra steps to give your body the support it needs.
Here are simple 4 steps you can take that have proven bedroom benefits.
The first step is to eat more fish. Fish oil helps combat two testosterone killers: inflammation and low cholesterol. Yes, LOW cholesterol.
Doctors who try to push statins on you probably neglect to mention that cholesterol is one of the building blocks of testosterone. So if you’re trying to artificially lower your cholesterol, you can bet you’ll be dragging your testosterone down with it.
Second, if zinc isn’t on your radar yet, it should be. Zinc could be considered the ultimate sex mineral, and if you don’t get enough, it almost always results in low sex drive. That’s because zinc helps keep testosterone high by blocking an enzyme that converts it to estrogen. Two excellent sources are beef and pumpkin seeds.
I also recommend gingko biloba. This ancient herb has the important job of improving circulation and opening blood vessels. It has even been shown to be 84% effective at combating the sexual dysfunction associated with antidepressants.
But by far, my most important piece of advice is this: Spend more time in the sun.
Most of the body’s production of vitamin D comes from the sun, and vitamin D is essential for the production of testosterone.
More D = More T. It’s as simple as that.
But that can be a problem in the winter, especially if you live north of the 37th parallel, where your body doesn’t make any vitamin D from the sun during the winter months.
Some call this the vitamin D winter…but it doesn’t have to mean winter for your sex life.
One way to overcome the vitamin D winter—and the hit to your testosterone levels—is to invest in a light box.
In one study, men who had problems associated with sexual arousal and desire spent 30 minutes a day in front of a light box. After just two weeks, these men experienced increased testosterone and a 3-fold increase in sexual satisfaction.
You can get a Sperti Vitamin D Light Box from Amazon.com. It’s not cheap, but trust me…it’s worth every penny.
