“3-Step Technique” Improves Arthritic Knees?! (AMAZING!)
You don’t realize how much you use your knees… until they hurt.
It’s bad enough that the pain can stop you from doing your favorite activities—like tennis, dancing, or gardening.
But it’s 10 times worse when you can’t even climb out of bed and walk to the bathroom without pain, stiffness, or discomfort.
You might end up popping pain pills, getting cortisone injections, or even considering surgery to deal with the pain.
But before you go down that rabbit trail, there’s something else you should consider…
It’s an unconventional and surprising “3-step technique” that can REDUCE pain and improve function in people with knee arthritis.
When your knees are hurting, the last thing you want to do is exercise.
But it’s often the best thing for them.
Researchers tested a new program called STEP-KOA in 300 patients with painful knee osteoarthritis. It stands for “stepped exercise program for patients with knee osteoarthritis.”
It’s a three-step program tailored to the individual’s needs. You only progress to the next step if you’re not experiencing improvements.
Step 1: An internet-based exercise program
Step 2: Coaching calls twice a month for three months
Step 3: In-person physical therapy
Half of the people did the STEP-KOA program, while the other half participated in an arthritis education program.
Of the people who completed all nine months of the program, 65 percent progressed to step two, and 35 percent progressed to step three.
Overall, the people doing the STEP-KOA program reported a greater improvement in pain and physical function than the education group.
That’s the good news.
The bad news is that the majority of the people in the STEP-KOA dropped out.
The point is, keeping your joints moving with gentle exercise can improve pain and function.
But like anything else, it only works if you actually do it.
