Delay Parkinson’s by 17 Years?! (It’s Now Possible!)
You may recall, that I’ve previously told you about two key nutrients that can dramatically reduce your risk of Parkinson’s disease.
Today, I have more encouraging news that can help you take control of your Parkinson’s risk…
And it’s BIG NEWS.
This time, researchers have identified a way to delay the onset of Parkinson’s disease by as much as 17 years.
It’s a way of eating that’s so effective against Parkinson’s, it deserves to be called the anti-Parkinson’s diet.
What you eat (or don’t eat) impacts every aspect of your health—including your mental health.
Most studies on diet and mental health are related to diet’s impact on memory, learning, and ultimately, dementia.
But this latest study was different because it looked at the connection between diet and Parkinson’s disease.
Unlike dementia, Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the central nervous system that affects movement. It causes the characteristic tremors, along with stiffness, slow movements, and loss of balance.
But even though it presents itself differently from dementia, Parkinson’s is also a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a loss of certain neurons in your brain.
That means that the same nutrients and eating programs that help reduce dementia risk can also protect against Parkinson’s!
To find out, researchers took a closer look at the connection between Parkinson’s and a brain-healthy diet called the MIND diet (which is a combination of the Mediterranean diet and DASH [dietary approaches to stop hypertension] diet).
Researchers studied 176 people and compared their adherence to this type of diet and their age of Parkinson’s onset.
They found that for women, following the MIND diet was associated with a delay in Parkinson’s disease of 17.4 years.
In men, there was an 8.4-year delay.
This was the first study to identify a link between this particular diet and the risk of Parkinson’s disease.
The MIND diet includes lots of vegetables, berries, nuts, olive oil, fish, and an occasional glass of wine.
And, of course, cutting out sugar and processed foods.
What’s even better? These same foods can reduce your risk of major diseases like cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes while protecting against major brain diseases like Parkinson’s.
