The BEST Drink for Anxiety (Surprising!)
It helps regulate mood and stabilize emotions
Do you know what the most common mental disorder in the U.S. is?
Anxiety.
It affects 40 million adults 18 or older. The feelings of panic, shortness of breath, sleep problems, heart palpitations, and more that go along with this condition can be crippling for those who experience it.
Sadly, most people who are suffering from it don’t receive the treatment they need.
But while many people turn to drugs for a condition like this, a recent study revealed that there’s a natural drink that is surprisingly effective at lowering the risk of anxiety and depression—and at promoting feelings of happiness.
And you’ll never guess what it is.
It’s not green tea, coffee, or a green vegetable drink.
In fact, it doesn’t have any color at all.
It’s water.
Yes, simply drinking more water can have a positive effect on your mental health.
That shouldn’t be too surprising. Seventy-five percent of brain tissue is water, and your cells rely on it to function properly.
Over the years, studies have shown that dehydration—even mild dehydration—increases negative emotions like anger, hostility, and fatigue.
In one study, when people who typically drink lots of water suddenly decreased their water intake, they felt LESS calm, LESS content, and MORE tense.
Boosting water intake also boosted their happiness.
Another study showed that people who drank five or more cups of water per day had a lower risk of anxiety and depression.
On the flip side, people who drank less than two cups per day had DOUBLE the risk.
These studies show the clear link between water and mental health. Other studies have given us insight into why they’re so intimately connected.
For example,
- Dehydration reduces energy production in the brain and can change the structure of the brain.
- The brain doesn’t function properly if it doesn’t get enough water, making it work extra hard.
- Dehydration can inhibit the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood and emotions.
- Dehydration can increase the stress hormone cortisol, which has been connected to anxiety.
This doesn’t mean that swigging water all day long will cure your mental health problems. But it could certainly be a piece of the puzzle—and one that is too often overlooked.
Just don’t overdo it.
The ideal amount of water to drink is half your body weight in ounces daily.
