How to Fight Back Against Age-Related Muscle Loss
As you get older, muscle strength isn’t just about how many reps you can do at the gym, or even the ease of carrying your groceries.
Stronger muscles are critical for healthy aging.
They help increase balance and reduce the risk of falls and fractures.
They’re also vital for maintaining independence.
The problem is that you lose muscle mass with every year that goes by, which means you need to take extra steps to keep what you’ve already got.
I just read a study about an unusual way to help maintain muscle strength and integrity as you get old.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Use it or lose it is certainly true when it comes to muscle strength.
But as you get older, you can use it—and still lose it.
Because muscle mass decreases up to five percent per year after age 30, you’ll need even more support to maintain healthy muscle mass as you get older.
One way to do that is with krill oil.
The new study looked at adults over 65 years old who engaged in less than one hour of exercise per week.
One group took krill oil for six months while the other group didn’t.
That was the ONLY difference.
At the end of the six months, the krill oil group had greater grip strength and knee extension strength, and thicker muscles on the outside of the thighs.
The researchers concluded that the omega-3s in krill oil help protect against loss of muscle mass and function that occurs with age.
Krill oil also has beneficial effects on your heart, reduces inflammation, and can help boost your mood.
Of course, a tasty way to increase omega-3s in your diet is through fatty fish like salmon. I eat it at least twice a week.
But you can also take a krill oil supplement. You can find them at your local health food store or online.
P.S. Scientists have identified a food that can boost muscle quality and strength in a matter of weeks. Click here to find out what this food is.
