Are These Billion-Dollar Drugs STARVING You From the Inside?
When you’re suffering from heartburn, you’ll do anything for relief.
That pain in your chest… and the feeling like hot lava is crawling up the back of your throat… are enough to drive anyone crazy.
But before you fall into the waiting arms of Big Pharma and start popping stomach acid drugs, there’s something you should know.
One of the most popular meds around… one that millions of people count on to fix their stomachs… could be like a wrecking ball for your gut instead.
In fact, new research is showing these drugs could practically be starving you from the inside.
If I had to rank the drugs I despise most, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) would be at the top.
It’s easy to see why.
These heartburn meds are ALREADY associated with an increased risk of fractures, infections, kidney disease, gastric cancer, and dementia—especially when taken for long periods.
All for a condition that can often be managed with lifestyle changes alone.
Now, a recent study has given us more reasons to steer clear of PPIs.
They could be literally starving you from the inside, depleting you of essential nutrients.
You see, acid-suppressing drugs interfere with nutrient absorption, so the researchers compared two common heartburn treatments to see which would have the greater impact on essential nutrient levels.
The study included 49 people with disorders related to gastric acid secretion, such as heartburn and GERD (gastric reflux disease).
One group was treated with the PPI omeprazole (Prilosec OTC), while the other group received standard antacids.
After 12 months, those taking the PPIs had significantly lower levels of:
- Magnesium
- Calcium
- Vitamin B12
These are absolutely vital nutrients for your heart, brain, and even your bones – and PPIs are keeping you from absorbing them.
Now, I’m not suggesting you ignore your heartburn. But there are proven, effective alternatives to PPIs, including strategies I use myself.
Practice intermittent fasting, where you only eat during the daylight hours. You’ll find yourself eating smaller meals and not eating at night – two effective ways to keep stomach acid in check.
Also, consider trying the Paleo diet, which focuses on only real foods (like meats, fruits, vegetables and nuts) that our caveman ancestors would have eaten. This will get acid reflux triggers like processed foods and additives out of your life.
And remember — never stop taking a PPI or other heartburn medication without talking to your doctor first.
Most heartburn medications require you to taper off of them to avoid your symptoms rushing back in what is known as a “rebound effect.”
