[COVID-19] Do You Have THIS Dangerous Symptom?
Some symptoms of COVID-19 are more common than others—like cough, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing.
This makes sense, since COVID-19 is considered a respiratory tract infection.
But it turns there are other common symptoms in patients with COVID-19—and they’re tied to more severe cases of the disease… and worse outcomes.
Here are the symptoms you should look out for.
If you end up with symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain, don’t assume you have a typical stomach bug—or even food poisoning.
According to numerous recent studies, these types of GI symptoms are also common in COVID-19 patients.
Worse, people who have these surprising symptoms tend to have more severe cases—and worse outcomes.
Researchers conducted a review and meta-analysis of 38 studies that included more than 8,400 patients with COVID-19.
They found that 15 percent of COVID-19 patients had at least one gastrointestinal symptom, such as diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
In addition, the patients who had diarrhea were more likely to have severe disease.
This could be because patients with diarrhea had an increased viral load, causing an increased systemic response to the virus.
Another review on 921 people with COVID-19 found that 22 percent of the patients had at least one GI symptom when they first became infected—with nausea and vomiting being the most common.
This study also found that people with GI symptoms tended to have worse outcomes and were more likely to be admitted to the hospital, the intensive care unit, and higher intubation rates.
In addition, the more GI symptoms someone had, the worse their symptoms.
If you or someone you know develops COVID-19, don’t overlook any GI symptoms that develop. They could be an early warning of more severe disease.
