I’ve got a scary statistic to share with you. But I’m doing it because it might just save your life one day.

Every year, around 800,000 Americans suffer a heart attack. That’s a staggering number of people whose lives are put in jeopardy by this medical emergency.

Here’s the thing, though—a lot of those heart attack victims had no clue what was happening to them when it first struck.

They missed out on crucial early treatment because they didn’t recognize the signs.

I want to make sure YOU are never one of them.

A large study analyzed nearly 12,000 heart attack cases and concluded that only about half of the people correctly identified they were having a heart attack based on their symptoms.

That’s not even a passing grade!

You see, we have this image burned into our minds of what a heart attack “looks” like from movies and TV—someone gripping their chest in pain, maybe clutching their arm if it’s numb. But the reality is, heart attacks can present themselves in all sorts of unexpected ways.

Less than a third of the people in the study knew that shortness of breath, cold sweats, and radiating pain could be heart attack symptoms. Only 7.5 percent knew lightheadedness was a sign, and a measly 1.3 percent associated stomach aches with heart attacks.

This lack of awareness is especially dangerous for women. Ladies often experience “atypical” symptoms like nausea, anxiety, or no chest pain at all. They often don’t realize what’s happening and delay seeking emergency care as a result.

The consequences of that delay can be fatal. The study found the in-hospital death rate was over FOUR times higher for people who didn’t recognize their heart attack symptoms compared to those who got treatment within two hours.

That’s because every minute counts when your heart is being starved of oxygen. Quick treatment to restore blood flow gives you the best chance at survival and limiting permanent damage.

So, let’s recap the symptoms that should have you racing to the hospital, just to be safe:

  • Chest pain/discomfort
  • Pain or numbness in the arm(s)
  • Dizziness
  • Cold sweats
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Vertigo

If any of those pop up, don’t try to tough it out or wait for it to pass. Call 911 or have someone drive you to the ER immediately. Even if it ends up being a false alarm, I’d rather you be embarrassed than risk your life.

Knowing the signs of a heart attack and acting fast could literally save your life. So, take a minute to burn these symptoms into your memory and share them with your loved ones, too.

It’s simple knowledge that packs a potentially life-saving punch.
