Forbidden Drink DOWNS Blood Pressure
I’m always frustrated by high blood pressure.
High blood pressure increases your risk of heart attacks and strokes, aneurysms, heart failure, metabolic syndrome, dementia, and more.
And more than 100 million people in the US have it.
But it is completely preventable.
I’ve talked to you about all sorts of ways to keep your blood pressure in check – including everything from eating certain foods, to exposure to blue light, to taking an afternoon nap.
But there’s one nutrient in particular I haven’t mentioned yet…
And it’s found in one of your favorite forbidden drinks.
I’m talking about resveratrol.
This natural compound found is famously found in red wine… and it’s also in blueberries, red grapes, and peanuts, too.
Previous studies have also shown resveratrol’s ability to help lower blood pressure, no one really knew how.
That’s what researchers from the UK determined to find out.
For their study, mice with high blood pressure where either fed a normal diet or a normal diet plus resveratrol.
As expected, the BP in the resveratrol mice dropped about 20 mmHg. But it was how resveratrol accomplished this that was quite surprising.
The resveratrol appeared to oxidize a protein called PKG1a. This came as a surprise, since resveratrol is an antioxidant, and typically oxidation is thought of as harmful.
If you’re like most of my patients, you’re probably not as interested in how it works… just that it does.
And that’s ok.
If you want to get more resveratrol, you can drink a glass of red wine every night.
But if you want to harness its blood-pressure-lowering benefits, you can purchase a resveratrol supplement from any online retailer.
