Hydrate for Your Heart?!
Many doctors and dietitians focus on what you should and shouldn’t be drinking for better heart health.
Of course, opinions on what constitutes good vs. bad is a different matter.
But today I want to take a step back from exactly WHAT you should be drinking, and focus on a bigger issue: Hydration.
Because according to a new study, dehydration can send your risk of heart failure SKYROCKETING.
I’ll tell you about the best ways to stay hydrated (hint: it’s not by drinking water).
Staying hydrated—whether it’s through water, tea, milk, or certain fruits—is something more seniors need to pay more attention to.
You see, the older you get, the less of a thirst sensation you have. That leaves many older adults without adequate hydration to support your body functions—including your heart.
And if you’re taking certain medications (like laxatives or diuretics) or if you have certain health conditions (like kidney disease or diabetes), you have an even greater risk of dehydration.
In a recent study published in the European Heart Journal, researchers followed more than 11,000 adults for more than 25 years.
They found that hypohydration—when your body loses water without replacing it—is associated with an increased risk of heart failure.
Staying well hydrated, on the other hand, decreased the risk of heart failure and slowed the decline of cardiac function.
In other words, better hydration = better heart health.
This doesn’t mean you have to guzzle gallons of water every day, but it does mean you need to be intentional about your hydration.
In addition to drinking water, you can get plenty of fluids by eating foods that contain a lot of water (like yogurt and fruit), sipping on herbal tea, or eating soup.
Just don’t wait until you’re thirsty to take a drink.
P.S. A recent study showed that taking this common drug can actually increase your risk of heart failure. Click here to find out what it is.
