Scientists all over the world are frantically searching for that one breakthrough treatment that will cure cancer once and for all.

Now, a recent study has highlighted their anti-cancer effects as well.

The study, published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, found that omega-3 fatty acids are able to slow the growth and spread of cancer cells.

But what really makes this study stand out is that the researchers found out WHY.

Your body has a built-in system called the endocannabinoid system that fights pain and inflammation. Research has shown that when omega-3s enter the body, they get broken down into endocannabinoid epoxides (EDP-EAs).

These are similar to the cannabinoids that are present in cannabis (medical marijuana) that are responsible for many of its health benefits.

These EDP-EAs have remarkable effects against cancer.

In one study, researchers discovered that mice with osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer that is particularly difficult to treat) that had spread to the lungs had an 80% increase in the body’s natural EDP-EAs in the lungs.

It turns out that the body was increasing the production of these molecules in order to combat the cancer cells. A closer look showed that the EDP-EAs were killing cancer cells, slowing tumor growth by stopping the supply of nutrients to the tumors, and stopping the tumor cells from spreading.

This latest study shows that one key reason for omega-3’s anti-cancer activity is the fact that it increases the body’s supply of these tumor-fighting molecules. 

Since cancer cells are especially deadly when they spread, finding compounds and developing therapies that slow their growth or keep them from spreading represents a key way to keep cancers under control and improve survival rates.

I recommend getting your omega-3s from food (rather than supplements). The foods with the highest levels include wild-caught salmon, eggs, and nuts.
