“Nighttime threat” HARMS your health?
“Getting healthy” doesn’t have to mean overhauling your diet or making unsustainable lifestyle changes.
Case in point:
Researchers identified one single change you can make to your daily routine that doesn’t involve diet, exercise, supplements, or spending any money—and it could reduce your risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and even obesity.
It doesn’t get any easier than this…
Sleep with the lights off.
A recent study evaluated older adults from 63 to 84 years old, and it showed that sleeping with any light on in the room at all was tied to an increased risk of:
- High blood pressure (hypertension),
- Type 2 diabetes, and
- Obesity.
For this particular study, the participants wore devices that tracked their light exposure over seven days.
Less than HALF of the individuals had a consistent five-hour period of complete darkness each night. Everyone else had at least SOME light exposure—even during the darkest hours of the night.
That might seem surprising… but chances are you fall into this category, too.
You see, light exposure at night doesn’t just mean leaving your overhead light or the lamp on your nightstand on.
It can include light from the television, your cell phone, a streetlight outside of your window, light filtering in from another room in your house, or a nightlight.
Your body was designed to sleep in total darkness, and any light that filters in (especially if it’s blue light like the kind emitted from your television) disrupts your circadian rhythm.
Your circadian rhythm is responsible for countless body functions… including factors involved in blood sugar and blood pressure control.
Of course, a study like this doesn’t prove that exposure to light at night causes these issues… but the connection is there nonetheless.
The lesson is simple: When it comes to light at night, less is more… but none is best.
P.S. Rates of thyroid cancer have been steadily increasing for years. And now, researchers have finally figured out why. It all boils down to “light threat” that’s damaging your thyroid. Click here to read about it.
