Vitamin D Useless Against Cancer? (Shocking!)
Vitamin D has been in the news a lot lately—especially when it comes to its benefits for COVID-19.
But today I want to talk about vitamin D’s cancer benefits.
Studies have shown that vitamin D lowers the risk of numerous types of cancer.
But there’s a catch.
A recent study revealed that vitamin D’s cancer benefits could be USELESS in more than HALF of adults in the U.S.
Here’s how to make sure you’re not one of them.
A recent study published in JAMA Network Open followed nearly 26,000 people in their 50s for five years. They were all cancer-free at the start of the study.
The researchers were looking for a connection between vitamin D, body weight, and cancer risk.
They found that people who took a vitamin D supplement had a 17 percent reduction in the risk of developing advanced cancer.
But people who took vitamin D and maintained a healthy body weight had a 38 percent reduced risk of cancer.
But here’s the part that really stood out…
There was no risk reduction in people who were overweight or obese.
Why would being overweight cancel out these benefits of vitamin D?
It’s likely because having higher amounts of body fat is associated with reduced vitamin D absorption.
That means that even if you’re taking a supplement—or getting plenty of sunlight—your body isn’t able to utilize it… which means you’re flushing vitamin D’s cancer-protective benefits down the toilet.
This study and others have shown that vitamin D can lower the risk of cancer.
But to get the most benefit, you have to maintain a healthy body weight as well.
