Relief from Restless Legs Syndrome?
All kinds of things can keep you up at night—but restless legs syndrome (RLS) is one of the worst.
Along with uncomfortable symptoms like aching, tingling, or burning, you can have an uncontrollable urge to move your legs.
And it can make nighttime miserable.
Simple measures like warm baths, massages, applying ice, or using heat can help ease symptoms.
In addition, a handful of supplements could deliver some much-needed relief.
Restless legs can severely disrupt sleep, keeping you awake or making it difficult to go back to sleep when you wake up. In fact, it’s classified as both a sleep AND movement disorder.
The syndrome can strike at any age and in both men and women. However, many folks who develop RLS are middle-aged or older.
It’s typically a lifelong condition, and there is no known cure. However, some supplements have reportedly helped relieve symptoms.
First up is vitamin C.
While it’s best known for its ability to support your immune system, vitamin C can also help with RLS.
Studies indicate that supplementation or IV treatment with vitamin C can ease the urge to move the legs, reduce itchiness, and improve sleep quality.
Vitamin D could also benefit people with RLS since studies consistently show that folks with restless legs tend to be D deficient.
The more severe the vitamin deficiency, the worse the symptoms.
Vitamin E, a potent antioxidant that supports the immune system and prevents blood clotting, can help reduce the symptoms of RLS in people with end-stage renal disease.
Since RLS is a neurological disorder, vitamin B12 could be helpful because it supports a healthy nervous system and brain.
Like vitamin D, studies show that the lower a person’s vitamin B12 level, the more severe their restless leg symptoms typically are.
Magnesium helps regulate many mechanisms in your brain (among hundreds of other things).
One study showed that magnesium and vitamin B6 together can relieve RLS symptoms while improving sleep quality.
If you’re suffering from RLS and regularly losing sleep, boosting levels of these key nutrients could bring some much-needed relief.
