Fun Hobby LOWERS Your Death Risk 31%
Being healthy and reducing your risk of disease shouldn’t have to take over your whole life.
And it doesn’t have to.
I’ve found over the years that it’s the simple changes that make the biggest difference – like switching out fried fish for grilled salmon or taking steps to avoid blue light at night.
Now, researchers have found that a simple, enjoyable hobby can actually help you live longer.
Here’s how to get started.
According to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, simple, low-impact activities like gardening can help you live longer.
For this study, the researchers followed 88,000 people from 40-85 years old for 11 years.
They found that the people who participated in low-to-moderate physical activities for 10 to 59 minutes per WEEK had an 18% lower risk of death from any cause, and a 12% lower risk of dying from a cardiovascular eventlike a heart attack or stroke.
And for those who spent a little longer doing moderate activity – 2.5 to 5 hours per week – lowered their risk of death by 31%.
It’s easy to see why something like gardening can be so beneficial. When you think about it, it’s essentially a whole-body workout.
Digging and raking actually increase your heart rate. You have to be able to squat and kneel as you move throughout the garden, which helps strengthens both large and small muscle groups. And working on uneven ground works your balance.
And you’re soaking up the benefits of the sun while you’re at it! It’s no wonder it’s so good for you.
But gardening wasn’t the only beneficial low-impact activity in this study. Others included things like dancing or walking.
The point here is something I keep trying to drive home. You don’t have to work up a sweat in the gym to get the benefits of movement.
Just keep moving.
And if you’re doing something you love, you’re more likely to keep at it.
