Need a Brain Boost? Try This.
I’m 65 years old, and I refuse to accept that “senior moments” are just a part of life.
My brain is just as sharp as it was 30 years ago, and I have a lifetime of good habits, good diet, good environment, and lots of activity to thank.
But don’t worry. Even if your lifestyle has been less than ideal, there are simple ways to keep your brain firing on all cylinders as you get older.
Here are 4 of the best.
I’ll start with one of my favorites: eat more fish.
Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids like DHA and EPA that have been proven to improve your memory, and even help you grow NEW brain cells!
One study even showed that omega-3 fatty acids lower your risk of developing dementia. For the best results, eat fatty fish like salmon at least twice a week.
For a quick brain boost, have some caffeine. It stimulates your brain and nervous system, making you feel more alert and energized, and boosting brain function.
Resveratrol is a fairly popular antioxidant compound found naturally in foods like red wine. While it’s been hailed for a long list of health benefits, its brain benefits stand out. Studies show that supplementing with resveratrol can improve brain function and enhance memory.
Curcumin. This one is most well-known for its anti-inflammatory benefits – and that’s exactly what makes it so good for your brain.
Just like elsewhere in your body, keeping inflammation in check in your brain simply helps it function better. So it’s no wonder that studies show that curcumin is beneficial for both thinking and memory.
When you think of B vitamins, think of the “B” standing for brain health. All of the B vitamin (1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12) are important for brain function. They boost production or neurotransmitters and help prevent dementia.
In fact, studies find that when you don’t get enough Bs, you’re at a greater risk of memory loss and cognitive decline.
Most of your Bs are found in foods like fruits, grains, leafy greens, and legumes. And you’ll get your supply of B12 from animal products.
Like I always say, no single solution is going to be your magic bullet for anything – brain health included. But when you focus on adding in lots of the “good stuff” like what I just mentioned (and cutting out the bad), you’ll be taking the steps you need for overall better health… and brain function, too.
