[Alert] Popular Painkiller CAUSING Hip Fractures?!
I can’t think of a single good thing about opioids. They leave millions heavily addicted and dependent.
And that’s why there is no reason why doctors should continue to prescribe a drug that they KNOW is so dangerous.
But if you thought the risk of addiction was the worst thing about these drugs, think again.
A study just came out showing that one particular opioid can strip away the independence of seniors… and even KILL them.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Tramadol is an opioid used to treat severe pain. Like all opioids, it comes with a major risk of addiction and dependence.
Despite this and other serious risk factors, this drug is still a common treatment for painful conditions like osteoarthritis.
In fact, prescriptions for tramadol increased by 22 percent between 2012 and 2015.
But the more we find out about this drug, the more I question why any doctor would continue to prescribe it.
I know I wouldn’t.
The most recent study, published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, shows that seniors who took tramadol had a much higher risk of suffering from a fracture.
Researchers studied the tramadol use and bone health of 145,000 seniors. At the end, they found that folks taking tramadol had a higher risk of having a hip fracture compared to those taking the NSAIDs naproxen or ibuprofen, or to those taking the COX-2 inhibitors celecoxib or etoricoxib.
This is a major problem for seniors, since suffering from a hip fracture dramatically increases your risk of dying within the year.
This study didn’t look at why tramadol increased the risk of fractures, but previous studies have shown that it increases your risk of seizures, dizziness, and delirium… three major factors that increase the risk of falling.
Separate studies have also shown that tramadol directly increases the risk of falling.
And falling is a major cause of fractures.
This is on top of a study published last year in JAMA showing that people 50 years old or older who took tramadol for osteoarthritis had a higher risk of dying, compared to people taking other pain relievers like naproxen (Aleve) or diclofenac (Cataflam).
Based on this most recent study, the increased risk of fractures could be a major reason why.
If you’re suffering from chronic pain (whether from osteoarthritis or something else), don’t just get a prescription filled with no questions asked.
If your doctor tries to send you home with this stuff, ask for a safer alternative… one where you won’t be risking your life to get rid of the pain.
