Top 3 Nutrients for the COVID-19 Era
When it comes to COVID-19, we all want to know what we can do to stay healthy.
I wish I could tell you that there was a magic pill to prevent it.
There isn’t.
But past research has provided key insights into the best way to protect yourself from ANY infection.
Based on this information, you can make an informed decision about how to best protect yourself as we head into winter.
Let’s take a closer look at the research behind three top nutrients.
COVID-19 is still too new for any large-scale studies to determine what treatments, supplements, or nutrients are effective against it.
But past studies offer guidance—and recent studies are trickling in as well.
Put the two together, and you have a guide for what could work—or not—for COVID-19.
Let’s start with vitamin D.
Vitamin D has been making headlines a lot these days.
Multiple studies have shown that having a vitamin D deficiency increases your risk of contracting COVID-19, having a more severe case, and even dying from it.
However, there haven’t been any studies showing whether increasing vitamin D levels reduce the risk or severity of COVID-19.
The good news is that are currently more than a dozen studies working on answering that question.
Until then, I recommend getting your vitamin D levels tested, and taking steps to boost your levels if you’re low.
Vitamin C is another one I often get asked about.
Like vitamin D, not many studies have been done on treating COVID-19 at this point. But (also like vitamin D) more than a dozen studies are currently underway looking into whether adding vitamin C to other coronavirus treatments could help alleviate symptoms or improve survival.
I’m optimistic, as vitamin C has been proven to boost your immune system and help fight inflammation—two things you definitely want to do if you’re ever infected with COVID-19.
During the winter, I recommend supplementing with vitamin C daily.
Last but not least is zinc.
Zinc is one you want to have on hand if you ever get a cold. It can shorten your duration of illness if you start taking it right away.
But can it help with COVID-19? Researchers are optimistic.
Based on past studies on zinc and coronavirus infections like SARS, researchers have concluded that studies “strongly suggest great benefits of zinc supplementation” for COVID-19.
And another study showed that people who survived COVID-19 tended to have higher zinc levels than those who died.
Since the common cold is a type of coronavirus, it makes sense to start taking zinc this winter as soon as you start noticing symptoms—whether it’s COVID-19 or a common cold.
