COVID-19’s “Achilles Heel”: A Natural Virus Killer
Dear Reader,
COVID-19 cases are on the decline in the U.S.
Finally.
But we’re not out of the woods yet.
You should still be taking steps to lower your risk of infection. The simplest ones—like washing your hands and social distancing—are still some of the most effective.
But there’s another way to stop the spread of this illness.
I like to call it COVID-19’s Achilles heel.
Scientists have known that it can kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus… but now they’ve discovered that it can kill the virus 8 times faster than they thought.
You know that the sun is essential for your overall health.
It’s the best source of vitamin D, and it’s the basis for your body’s circadian rhythm.
But it turns out the sun could be your BEST WEAPON against the coronavirus as well!
And not just because it increases your body’s vitamin D levels (and higher vitamin D levels have been consistently connected to a lower risk of severe COVID-19 infection).
It’s because the sun’s ultraviolet rays can directly kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
In a letter in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, researchers talked about coronavirus’s vulnerability to sunlight.
A lab study published last July showed that sunlight rapidly inactivated the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
In fact, 90 percent of the infectious virus in simulated saliva was inactivated every 6.8 minutes.
This was more than 8 times faster than expected.
Scientists initially believed it was the sun’s UV–B rays that inactivated the virus’s RNA.
But this rapid deactivation indicates that there’s more to the story.
Enter UV-A.
UV-A is a less energetic component of sunlight. But the researchers believe that it could be interacting with some of the molecules in a way that rapidly speeds up the virus’s inactivation.
If that’s what NATURAL sunlight can do, imagine the power of artificial bulbs that are even stronger than sunlight.
This indicates that LIGHT treatments could be an effective way to prevent infection in high-risk settings like hospitals and public transportation.
There is still more research to be done to verify studies like these.
But in the meantime, soaking in as much natural sunlight as possible could be one of the most beneficial preventive measures when it comes to COVID-19.
P.S. If you or a loved one are ever in the unfortunate position of getting the virus, you’ll want to know about these four ways to reduce your severity.
