[COPD]: 10 Ways to Breathe EASIER
If you have COPD, you know how difficult it can be just to breathe.
Add in the chronic coughing and excess mucous production, and it’s easy to see how this condition can RUIN your quality of life.
There is no cure for COPD, but there are natural treatments that can clear mucous from your lungs and help open your airways, making it easier to breathe.
They can be used in addition to standard treatments to bring some much-needed relief.
Here are 10 of the best.
Essential oils have become extremely popular in recent years.
I don’t consider them to be a cure-all, but I’ve found that certain oils can be very helpful for some specific conditions.
And COPD is one of them.
COPD is an inflammatory airway disease that can make every breath difficult. But breathing in the fumes of certain plants can help with the condition by fighting inflammation, helping clear mucous, and opening your airways.
Here is a list of 10 essential oils that could bring some relief for people suffering from COPD.
Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus essential oil contains a compound called 1,8-cineole that has numerous benefits for COPD.
It’s been shown to help prevent flare-ups in moderate to severe cases of COPD.
It helps reduce mucous production and clear mucous from your lungs.
It can help open the airways in your lungs, too.
Another compound in eucalyptus called mytrol has anti-inflammatory properties that can help thin out mucous.
And a study in animals showed that eucalyptus essential oil reduced markers of COPD.
Rosemary
Rosemary also contains 1,8-cineole.
It also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help boost your immune system.
Thyme and Oregano
These essential oils contain two compounds—carvacrol and thymol—that have been found to reduce inflammation in the airways.
They have been found to reduce markers of inflammation in an animal model of COPD.
Orange and Bergamot
Concentrated compounds from orange and bergamot have been found to help prevent the oxidative damage in the lungs that can lead to COPD.
Lavender and Chamomile
Stress can exacerbate symptoms of COPD. Fortunately, lavender and chamomile aromatherapy have been found to reduce depression, anxiety, and stress levels.
Frankincense and Myrrh
Studies have shown that these two essential oils suppress inflammation throughout the body. This could have an overall beneficial effect for COPD since it is characterized by chronic inflammation in the lungs.
I want to stress that these oils are not a cure for COPD, and they shouldn’t be used instead your regular treatment.
But they could bring additional relief when added to your existing medical treatment.
There are numerous ways to use essential oils. You can put them in a diffuser and breathe in the vaporized fumes.
You can also apply them directly to your chest, but be sure to dilute them in a carrier oil first.
