[Study] 4 Supplements Linked to Lower COVID-19 Risk?
When it comes to COVID-19, you should be doing whatever it takes to lower your risk — especially if you’re an older adult.
According to the CDC, 8 out of 10 COVID-19 deaths have been in people over 65.
And, compared to people 5-17 years old, the rate of death in folks from 65-74 is 1300 TIMES HIGHER.
That’s not a typo.
But whatever your age, you can do more than cross your fingers and hope for the best when it comes to avoiding COVID-19.
In fact, a study found that there are four top supplements linked to a lower risk.
For this study, researchers used data from an app called the COVID-19 Symptom Study app. It was launched in the UK, US, and Sweden in March 2020 for people to record data throughout the pandemic.
Subscribers recorded information like age, location, risk factors, symptoms, healthcare, and coronavirus test results.
From March to July, researchers were able to gather data from over 350,000 people in the UK alone.
What they found was that after accounting for factors like age and diet, four dietary supplements stood out for lowering the risk of infection with COVID-19 in women: probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, multivitamins, and vitamin D.
Specifically, the following were associated with a lowered risk:
- Probiotics by 14 percent
- Multivitamins by 13 percent
- Omega-3s by 12 percent
- Vitamin D by 9 percent
Similar tends were seen in the US and Sweden as well, although fewer people in these countries were using the app.
As with any self-reporting type of study, these results do not indicate direct cause and effect. But I’m not surprised that these particular nutrients made the list.
Probiotics help support a healthy microbiome—which is where up to 80 percent of your immune system resides.
Vitamin D modulates both your innate and adaptive immune system responses and has been connected to a lower risk of severe COVID-19 and of dying from it.
Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce overall inflammation in your body, and supplementing with them has the potential to decrease viral entry, promote better immune function, and decrease the severity of COVID-19 among people who already have it.
And a multivitamin helps support your overall health and wellness, which is key to preventing infection with ANY virus.
The bottom line is that having adequate levels of ALL of your body’s key nutrients is the best way to guard against any illness at all… COVID-19 included.
It starts by eating a healthy diet. To fill in the gap, taking key nutrients like the ones listed above is the next best thing.
P.S. When it comes to COVID-19, they key is to stay informed. Click here to read my earlier article about a risk that could up your chances of getting COVID-19.
