“Cold Fighting” Supplement Actually LOWERS Blood Pressure!
If you’re not on the blood pressure bandwagon yet, it’s time to hop on.
High blood pressure is one of the BIGGEST risk factors for heart disease — and it’s entirely preventable.
Diet plays a big role, and so does your weight.
But today, I want to tell you about another — easier — way to help keep your blood pressure under control.
It’s a supplement you’re probably already familiar with… but for an entirely different reason.
You might already be stocked up on zinc so that you can take it at the first sign of a cold.
After all, this mineral supplement is well known for its ability to reduce the duration and severity of a cold if you take it right away.
But it turns out zinc could be another weapon in your arsenal against hypertension.
A meta-analysis of randomized, controlled clinical trials that was published in Nature Communications showed that zinc supplementation can decrease systolic blood pressure.
On the flip side, a deficiency in zinc has been shown to contribute to high blood pressure!
This study also indicated that the reason zinc is a factor in blood pressure is because it plays a role in vascular tone regulation.
Interestingly, this was an accidental discovery by the researchers…
They were investigating the role of zinc supplements on brain function in Alzheimer’s disease when they noticed a “pronounced and unexpected” decrease in blood pressure in a mouse model.
After further investigation, they learned that zinc ultimately helps lower calcium levels in the muscle of blood vessels.
Calcium doesn’t belong in your arteries, and when it ends up there, it causes them to narrow, which increases blood pressure and restricts blood flow.
By reducing calcium levels in your blood vessels, zinc helps blood vessels relax, which decreases blood pressure and boosts blood flow.
The researchers ultimately advocated for a zinc-based blood pressure drug.
Why?
Zinc supplements already exist, and they’re a great way to boost your levels.
Of course, altering your diet and losing weight is the best way to get your blood pressure under control. But if you need an extra boost along the way, it looks like zinc could be a great way to do it.
