Superstar Vitamin SLOWS Alzheimer’s?!
When it rains, it pours.
And right now, studies are pouring in on ways to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
I don’t know about you, but with skyrocketing cases of this conditions — and no cure in sight — I’ll be “soaking in” all the prevention I can get.
For this latest study, researchers have identified a simple vitamin that has the potential to not only help prevent Alzheimer’s disease — but to slow its progression in those who already have it.
This study focused specifically on vitamin K2, which is primarily found in fermented foods and some cheeses (like Munster and Camembert).
Most Americans don’t get nearly enough of these foods — or this key vitamin — which means we could be missing out on a powerful weapon against Alzheimer’s.
Researchers conducted a comprehensive review of the brain-protective effects of vitamin K2.
Surprisingly, none of these studies looked at the specific connection between vitamin K2 and Alzheimer’s disease.
However, many of the studies showed just how protective it is for your brain.
For example, the results showed cells pretreated with vitamin K2 helped prevent the death of neurons.
Plus, it reduced the presence of reactive oxygen species and increased the amount of glutathione, considered one of the most powerful antioxidants.
The MK-7 form of vitamin K2 is especially crucial for brain health.
It can suppress the production of proinflammatory cytokines, which has the powerful effect of reducing neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration.
And in a mouse test, treatment with vitamin K2 helped reverse cognitive delay and mitigated cognitive deficits caused by an anesthetic drug.
Low levels of vitamin K2 also contribute to steps that can cause Alzheimer’s by causing disruptions in your gut microbiome.
Supplementation with vitamin K2 has also been shown to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease by as much as 50 percent.
And heart disease has been linked to dementia.
After reviewing the evidence, the researchers concluded that vitamin K2 has many neuroprotective properties that could make it play a key role in preventing and treating Alzheimer’s disease.
The best way to get more vitamin K2 in your diet is to eat more fermented foods like sauerkraut, yogurt, and kimchi.
Fermented foods have the added benefit of boosting the beneficial bacteria in your gut.
