6 Ways to COMBAT Fatty Liver Disease
Proven treatments for NAFLD
There’s a silent epidemic sweeping the nation.
It has nothing to do with heart disease, Alzheimer’s, or even drug overdoses, yet it is now the fifth most common cause of death.
I’m talking about non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
The scary part about this condition is that you can have it without any symptoms, which means it can silently progress without any warning at all.
The best thing you can do to lower your risk is to adjust your diet to avoid the things that caused it in the first place.
Easier said than done, right?
That’s why I want to tell you about six key nutrients that have been proven to help fight fatty liver.
Fatty liver disease is typically associated with alcoholism.
That’s why this form is specifically called “non-alcoholic” fatty liver disease.
In recent years, there’s been a surge in NAFLD, which occurs when poor diet and lifestyle choices cause fat to build up in the liver.
This poses a major problem, since the liver is essential for storing energy, helping digest food, and removing toxins from your body.
When fat gunks up your liver, not only does it affect how it functions, but it also can progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular cancer if it’s left untreated.
NAFLD is most often caused by obesity, and it is present in more than 50 percent of people with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
That’s why fixing your lifestyle is the first and best way to get this condition under control.
Beyond that, here are six additional ways to help naturally combat fatty liver.
- Probiotics.
A review of studies found that probiotics are superior to placebo in patients with NAFLD. And when taken daily for eight weeks along with omega-3s, it reduced liver fat, improved serum lipids, and reduced inflammation in people with NAFLD.
- Curcumin
Supplementing with curcumin has been shown to have a beneficial effect on metabolic markers in patients with NAFLD.
A separate study showed that curcumin specifically impacted liver enzymes in people with NAFLD, which is an indicator of the condition’s severity.
- Coffee
Believe it or not, drinking coffee has been linked to a lower incidence of fatty liver.
This could be because coffee has strong antioxidant properties, and inflammation is believed to contribute to NAFLD.
In addition, animal studies have shown that coffee can help prevent NAFLD by how it affects pathways in the gut and liver.
- Silymarin
You may have never heard of this one. Silymarin is an extract of milk thistle, and it’s been used to treat liver conditions for ages.
Now, more recent studies have shown that it can reduce markers of disease in patients with NAFLD… and that it could even be more beneficial than the drug metformin.
It was also shown to reduce liver fibrosis in people who took it three times a day for 48 weeks.
- Vitamin D
Low vitamin D levels have been associated with the presence of NAFLD. On the other hand, boosting vitamin D levels has been shown to significantly improve metabolic, chemical, and inflammatory markers of NAFLD.
- Vitamin E
Supplementing with vitamin E has been shown to significantly improve liver function in people with NAFLD. It also enhanced abnormal liver enzyme levels.
